After the long flight you will welcome the opportunity to stretch your legs as the tour manager leads the group on a walking tour through the old town with its magnificent baroque buildings; including a visit to the 1000-year-old Romanesque Mainz Cathedral to view the world-famous Chagall windows and Eduard Kreyssig's huge neo-Renaissance cupola of Christchurch at St. Stephan Church. Afterwards, the group will check-in to the hotel, have time to freshen up before gathering for our “welcome to Germany” dinner.  Overnight Mainz

Day 3, Worms, Winery Visit and Tasting, Heidelberg (B, L)

Today we begin our journey along the Reformation Road with a visit to the city of Worms.  Worms is the location where Luther was summoned in 1521 to appear before an Imperial Diet to justify his conduct. We visit the world’s largest Memorial to the Reformation, the Church of the Holy Trinity, and St. Peter’s Cathedral- one of the most exquisite examples of Romanesque architecture. We’ll learn more about another Reformer, William Tyndale, who finished his printing of the English Bible in Worms, escaping persecution in England. In 1525 his New Testament was printed and smuggled back into England. It was the first translation of the Bible from the original Greek into English (known to be the first translation of a Greek book into English.)

Next, enjoy a picturesque drive through the gentle landscape of budding vineyards and fertile orchards of the wine region. This afternoon we visit a local winery and vineyards to learn more about the history of wine-making in this region, including wine tastings and lunch with regional cuisine.

We complete our day in the city of Heidelberg, a lovely town on the Neckar River. Our guide will lead a walking tour to the Reformation memorial site in University Square commemorating the important first steps of the Reformation. Even back in Luther's day, student life shaped Heidelberg, Germany's oldest university town. It was in a room of this university, where Luther presented his beliefs to the Augustinian Order in 1518, shortly after nailing his theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg.  We return to Mainz for the evening, dinner is on your own to dine at the hotel or one of the local restaurants in the market center. Your tour manager will provide dining suggestions within walking distance of the hotel.  Overnight Mainz
