ITINERARY

B-Breakfast, L- Lunch, D-Dinner

Day 1,              Depart U.S.A. to Frankfurt, Germany

Day 2,              Arrive Frankfurt Germany, Herzlich Willkommen in Deutschland! (B, D)

Upon arrival the group will be met at the airport by our professional European tour manager and will accompany the group throughout the journey.  Your tour manager will escort the group to the waiting private motor coach.  You begin the journey with a drive to the nearby city of Mainz, where the Roman relics give away the fact of its 2000-year heritage! After the long flight you will welcome the opportunity to stretch your legs as the tour manager leads the group on a brief walking tour through the old town with its magnificent baroque buildings; including a visit to the 1000-year-old Romanesque Mainz Cathedral to view the world-famous Chagall windows and Eduard Kreyssig's huge neo-Renaissance cupola of Christchurch at St. Stephan Church. Afterwards, the group will check-in to the hotel, have time to freshen up before our “welcome to Germany” dinner.  Overnight Mainz

Day 3,              Gutenberg Museum, Rhine River Cruise, Worms (B)

After a full German breakfast, the group begins the day with a visit to the Gutenberg Museum, to view the 2-copies of the Gutenberg Bibles (circa 1455), working replica of the original wooden press, and centuries-old manuscripts.

Next, we enjoy a relaxing Rhine River cruise. An unforgettable sightseeing cruise along the Rhine River, along one of the most picturesque stretches of this majestic Rhine waterway past magnificent castles and the fascinating backdrop of the Loreley Rock.

Afterwards, we begin our journey along the Reformation Road to the city of Worms.  Just a short drive south to Worms is the location where Luther was summoned in 1521 to appear before an Imperial Diet to justify his conduct. We visit the world’s largest Memorial to the Reformation and the Church of the Holy Trinity, Peter’s Cathedral- one of the most exquisite examples of Romanesque architecture. We’ll learn more about another Reformer, William Tyndale, who finished his printing of the English Bible in Worms, escaping persecution in England. In 1525 his New Testament was printed and smuggled back into England. It was the first translation of the Bible from the original Greek into English (known to be the first translation of a Greek book into English.)  Overnight Mainz

Day 4,              Wartburg Castle, Eisenach, Bach Museum (B, D)

This morning we visit the magnificent Wartburg Castle. It was here where Luther took refuge while translating the New Testament into the German language. Our guided castle tour includes the chapel, and the Luther Room where “Junker Jörg” translated the Bible.

Afterwards enjoy a short 30- minute leisurely walk downhill along the Lutherweg “Luther Way” along the path walked by Luther from the Wartburg to Eisenach.  Or you may ride the coach down the hill to the city center.  Here you have time at leisure for lunch before our group visit at Bach Museum, which houses an extensive collection of instruments from the 16-19th century, including a musical performance on historical instruments.  Our group will continue on to Erfurt for the next two nights.  Overnight Erfurt

Day 5,              Erfurt (B)

After breakfast our tour manager will lead a walking tour of the city including the medieval Kramer Bridge, the ensemble of the Church of St. Severus and St. Mary's Cathedral (where Luther was ordained), and the Augustinian Monastery where Luther lived as a monk from 1505-1511 and where he studied, worshiped, and was inspired to create the “Luther Rose”.  This afternoon enjoy this beautiful city at leisure.  Overnight Erfurt

Day 6,              Buchenwald Memorial, Weimar, Leipzig (B, D)

Today we continue our journey to Leipzig, the city of music.  Along the way we visit the Buchenwald Concentration Camp Memorial. This afternoon we stop in Weimar for a brief docent guided visit Herderkirche (City Church of St. Peter and Paul) dating from 1498, where Martin Luther preached and J.S. Bach performed. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998.  Here we view the world-renowned Weimar Altarpiece painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder and Younge. Next, we continue our journey to Leipzig. We check in to our hotel and our group will meet for dinner.  Overnight Leipzig

Day 7,              Sunday, St. Lukaskirche Worship Service SELK, Leipzig (B, L)

We awake in the majestic city of Leipzig, commonly known as “the city of music”. This morning our group will attend worship service (10AM) at St. Luke’s Church, Leipzig.

After church, we begin our guided walking tour including the privilege of visiting Nickolaikirch (St. Nicholas Church), the home of the faithful “Pray for Peace” Christians and the powerful force that transformed Germany’s East and West, and St. Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church) where Luther preached and Johann Sebastian Bach performed and directed the famous St. Thomas Boys choir.

Along the way we stop to enjoy a group lunch around 1PM at the historic Auersbach Keller Restaurant and view the Reformation art display on the walls of the “Luther Room” and the “Wine Cellar Room”. On display is the reproduction (only one of its kind, original piece was destroyed) of the Leipzig Debate between Martin Luther and Dr. Eck. Afterwards, we continue our walking tour.

Later this afternoon and evening enjoy time at leisure in this marvelous city for independent exploration. The awesome musical and intellectual heritage of Leipzig goes far beyond Bach. It was here that Schiller wrote his immortal Ode to Joy later to be adopted as the principal theme of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony (written in Leipzig as well.) Music lovers may enjoy a stroll along the “Leipzig Music Trail” which links the places where composers Bach, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Wagner lived and worked. Or perhaps a visit to the Mendelssohn Haus Museum open 10a-6p, or the interactive Bach Museum open 10a-6p, home to the second-largest stock of Bach original in the world!

Optional musical performance to be determined by future scheduling. Overnight Leipzig

Day 8,              Dresden (B)

Today you have a choice, enjoy a group visit to the city of Dresden with your tour manager, or explore Leipzig on your own- time for shopping, a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts open 10a-6p for classical and modern art, or the historic Stasi headquarters at the Museum in der Runden Ecke open 10a-6p, former local headquarters of the GDR’s secret police.

Join your tour manager for a full day excursion (2-hour drive) through the countryside to the city of Dresden, the fascinating city of art and culture. It’s Baroque buildings and museums featuring world-class art, and its lovely setting on the Elbe, combine to make it a stunning and beautiful city. Our group will be joined by a local guide for a city walk including the Old City, views of the Semper Opera, Court Church, and Zwinger Gallery and visit the Frauenkirche Protestant Church- destroyed in 1945 in a massive firebombing so intense the city of Dresden burned for nearly a week. Reconstruction of the church began in 1994 and after many years of rebuilding the church reopened in 2006.

This afternoon is at leisure in Dresden, for lunch and perhaps a visit to the Zwinger Art Museum housing works of art from the 15-18th centuries, revisit some of the sites on your walking tour or shopping for local crafts and traditional German products. Depart Dresden at 4pm and return to Leipzig for the evening. Overnight Leipzig

This evening dinner is on our own at one of the local café’s, beer gardens, pizza shops or pubs. Overnight Wittenberg

Day 10,            Wittenberg, Worship Service (B, D)
